We will start summer registration the first part of March. The 3 year old all the way through fifth grade programs are run like a camp during the summer.  We have many different types of programs in the Center along with weekly field trips.

I have been a member of CUMC for only a few years, but I hear two opposing thoughts about the Child Development Center.  First, I have heard glowing reports about this wonderful program and the CDC staff.  I have worked with Linda Van Sickle, the director of CDC, on several occasions, and I am extremely impressed with all aspects of this very professionally and compassionately run operation.  While we worked on the accounting system one afternoon, Linda was also comforting one little girl while holding ice on a “boo boo”.  Then she rocked another little guy with a tummy ache until mom could come to get him.  The level of love and caring at CDC is very apparent. What better way to reach young children and teach them the love of Jesus?

During the last 5 years, CDC has paid $366,000 in monthly rent to CUMC, contributed $56,000 in additional year-end funds toward CUMC’s budget, and $32,000 toward the Contingency fund.  In addition, they have made the following capital improvements to our facilities:

Weekly floor buffing - $100/mo
Carpet cleaning twice yearly
Sanctuary carpet commercially cleaned twice
Water Fountains installed in Fellowship Hall
Painted Fellowship Hall - $7,450
New Carpet & Tile in classrooms, Youth Room and Hallways - $8,085
Landscaping - $25,970
Tree Removal - $9,175
Chain link fence and expansion of playground - $3,788
New Playground Equipment - $28,532
Door Mats - $600
Divider Repairs - $4,500
Electrical repairs and upgrading - $3,500
Toward Parking Lot Paving - $10,000
Asphalt bike path and walkway - $6,071
Repair of Kitchen Freezer - $190

From 2003-2007, the CDC has contributed the following to mission projects:

1.      St. Jude Hospital Bike-a-Thon - $5,000
2.      Children’s Hospital McDonalds House book sale - $300
3.      American Red Cross for 911 - $500
4.      ASP car wash - $400
5.      Annual Holiday Food Baskets – at least six turkeys
6.      CUMC Food Bank & Baby Pantry by selling Kid’s Stuff books - $1000 & yearly food collections
7.      Convalescent Center -- collected toiletry items at Christmas & visits by children singing their musicals
8.      Angel Tree Gifts for Children
9.      Adopt a family Christmas Gift
10.     Mitten Tree
11.     School Supplies, coats, shoes, etc for a school in Maine
12.     Children’s shoes & medical supplies for Afghanistan
13.     Zimbabwe Mission - $1000 in supplies for auction
14.     Stage in Fellowship Hall - $1000
15.     MS donations
16.     Christmas Stockings (25) for soldiers in Iraq containing telephone cards
17.     CDs, DVDs, candy, Christmas decorations, etc.
18.     UMW coat collection
19.     Mississippi Katrina Disaster - $250 collected in pennies
20.     Scholarships to CUMCDC - $59,685

I am sure a lot has been omitted.  I don’t think anyone can read these lists and not be proud that the CDC is a big part of CUMC.

May you find 2008 filled with Love, Joy and Peace.
